My question was this:
Our MS media specialist has been asked to find an "academic version"
(abridged and cleaned up a bit) of the Alex Haley's "Roots" or an
alternative. The teachers have had a filmstrip/cassette set that is
acceptable, but there now is a cassette missing. I'm quite sure we
can't find a replacement for that, but have you found anything that
might cover the same content as "Roots"?
It appears that there is little to substitute.
Here are the responses:
The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers is a book written for middle
school that tells a generational family story similar to Roots. As far
as I know, there is no video.

This is a stretch: Virginia Hamilton's _Magical Adventures of Pretty
Pearl_.
Are you and the person interested in "Roots" aware that it ended up
being a fictionalized account of the Haley family? I was sorely
disappointed during my library science classes to discover that fact as
I researched reviews in order to use "Roots" in an assignment. That
book so impressed me in my mid-twenties when the book and tv series came
out that it had a major impact on my life and interest in family
history, so I wanted to include it in a project. I did use it somewhat
but not as extensively as I originally planned.
