I've done this same thing in my library with an old encylopedia set. Makes a coffee table and 2 end tables. Used liquid nails, and for school, I used plexiglass. We took them home and looked through them, but they were really old. We washed the covers and my dad brushed some adhesive on the inside covers and the loose sides. Then he separated the books into piles by thickness. Sometimes, two thin books would equal one thicker book. Then he got a bunch of plywood and began laying the books out like a jigsaw puzzle, gluing them to the plywood. He had a layer of plywood, then a few layers of books, all glued together.
