Several people have asked for a hit on this topic. I have passed the = messages on to the teacher and have only looked into a few of the sites = myself, but it has already been a big help. Thanks to all who passed on the information... Try Encounter by Jane Yolen I have been reading Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen and it has = quite a lot that you might find helpful. These can hopefully get you started http://www.pilgrimhall.org/museum.htm =20 http://members.aol.com/calebj/thanksgiving.html =20 http://www.pilgrims.net/plymouth/thanksgiving.htm =20 http://www.rootsweb.com/~mosmd/#part2 =20 http://pilgrims.net/plymouth/index.htm =20 http://members.aol.com/mayflo1620/books.html =20 http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/p/plymthc1ol.asp Try these sites: http://www.genealogyforum.rootsweb.com/gfaol/Thanksgiving/NAPerspective.h= tm http://www1.minn.net/~keithp/destruct.htm http://depts.washington.edu/stepcofs/Curriculum/MidLithanksgiving.htm http://www.2020tech.com/thanks/temp.html This from Scholastic site ( http://teacher.scholastic.com/fieldtrp/childlit/thnksgiv.htm ): Native Americans have a very different perspective on Thanksgiving. Many = do not view the traditional American holiday in a positive light at all, considering it more an unpleasant reminder of the negative experiences = of Native Americans in history. Thanksgiving: A Native Perspective is a = source book for teachers available through Oyate <http://www.oyate.org>. This Native organization works "to see that our lives and histories are = portrayed honestly, and so that all people will know our stories belong to us."=20 Also asked a native american friend of mine this question and she sent = some suggestions. as you can see from the bottom of her email, she's not = read everything on these sites, but it's a place to start. These are sources from the Native perspective - some people would say it's NOT the straight scoop, but I believe it's = more accurate than the perpetual fairy tale. Go to http://www.oyate.org/catalog/teacher.html and find the book _Thanksgiving: A Native Perspective_, for $15.00. Also check Howard Zinn's _A People's History of the United States_. = He's an eye-opener on the Pilgrims. Also, some websites: National Day of Mourning http://www.holidays.net/thanksgiving/mourn.htm Teaching about Thanksgiving (lesson plan from The Center for World = Indigenous Studies site) http://www.night.net/thanksgiving/lesson-plan.html National Holiday For Native Americans http://www.unitednativeamerica.com/petition-edu.htm Are You Teaching the Real Story of the "First Thanksgiving"? http://www.education-world.com/a_curr/curr040.shtml offered are annotated book lists for different age groups, as well as = videos and other resources for teaching accurately about Native Americans.=20 Mary Beth Gaub Library Media Specialist Florence-Carlton Middle School/HighSchool Florence, MT 59833 gaubmb@florence.k12.mt.us =20 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
