I was reading Caps for Sale to a kindergarten class. Got two priceless comments. One child observed that the pile of caps on the peddler's head were WAY higher than his arm could possibly reach. In all my years reading this book (including my own childhood), I never thought of that and neither did anyone else listening to my reading. He was right. To be able to reach up and check on his red caps (at the top of the stack), his arm would have been longer than he was tall! While I was digesting this observation, another kid asked where the cats were. "Caps" isn't a word these kids use much, especially for head gear. So he heard "Cats for sale. Fifty cents a cat." Makes about as much sense as a lot of other things in kids stories. All I could think of was "I've got to tell LM_NET this one."
