Diary of Mad Librarian
Server upgrade day 3:

Newer, better, stronger, faster=85  =93Just a few hours,=94 he said.  =
=93Four or five, max,=94 he said. The server is still down. Actually =
it is up and running=97there are just no user accounts. No database =
access. The first back-up tape was bad. The second one seems ok but =
the library database folder is missing. I hope the redundant back-up on =
my workstation is good. I=92ll just reinstall and restore from backup. =
It=92ll take=85 just a few hours.

Natives are getting restless. Constant drumming and wailing. Maybe =
just in my head. Student enters library, walks past NO COMPUTERS =
sign=97actually bumps the sign with his shoulder, =93are the computer =
up?=94 he asks hopefully. In my head I am the grumpy amusement park =
mascot on the Snickers commercial, shouting, =93Gee, I don=92t know. =
Maybe somebody should put up a sign or something!=94 In my head. =
=93Still down,=94 I reply with a weak smile.

Impatient teacher number 23 comes in to confirm the obvious. =93When =
will they be up,=94 she asks with an annoyed tone. =93This is really =
inconvenient,=94 she adds, her voice rising. I reply sarcastically, =
=93Inconvenient? Really? I find this all very convenient and non-stop =
fun.=94  In my head.

Impatient teacher number 24 brings a brilliant suggestion.  =93Should I =
write up a work order?=94 =93Yes, that will do it! We could fix all of =
this in a few minutes if only we had a complaint on a slip of paper!=94 =
Again, in my head (I hope, it=92s hard to tell the difference anymore). =
But the brilliance doesn=92t stop there. =93Have you called district =
office?=94 Our savior! =93Yes, we should call the Novell-illiterate =
technician who most likely caused the problems that necessitated the =
upgrade in the first place (although he is sure he didn=92t do anything =
wrong).=94 Was that in my head? Who cares?

Managed to bypass the file server and gain Internet access. Can check =
my e-mail through the district office Web server. Thank God their =
ten-day e-mail server upgrade fiasco is over. Now I just need to go =
through these 350 LM_NET messages=85

We have gone native. Checking out books by paper and pencil. My =
Luddite clerk is happy as a clam. How do I function in this =
environment? =20
=20
The horror, the horror=85
