book title needed

Since the collective memory for recalling book titles has been so
successful today, I will repost my request for a title.

The book, or short story, is about the perceptions of a traveler who
spies something dead along the side of the road.  The story details
different views of the dead "thing".  In the end, the thing is revealed
to be a person.  The teacher read this story in the 8th grade.  Does it
ring any bells for anyone?
