I need some clarification on the purpose of summer reading lists. I realize summer is over for all of us - but it will be here again soon. I had always thought summer reading lists should be interesting books to encourage our students to read and enjoy the reading during the summer. My entering 9th grade niece had to read Huckleberry Finn; my daughter of the same age had to read A Lesson Before Dying; my entering 12th grade nephew had to read The Old Man and the Sea. None of them enjoyed the book they had to read. Am I wrong about the purpose of summer reading - or do we need to suggest more contemporary literature to our Language Arts departments?
