These are some hits I got for some 1st month ideas of a library lesson = format. If anyone has other ideas to add, please email me and I'll post = another hit. Melissa Jaffe Library Media Specialist Yonkers - Elementary School, NY -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ------- I still review class rules, circulation procedures, and care of books = for all grades. I do read to the older ones at the beginning, selecting = chapters from some great books to hook them: Gary Paulsen's My Life in = dog Years, De Felice's weasel, Eva Ibbotson or Roald Dahl.. Gail Conley Media Specialist (K-5) Elms Elem. School Jackson, NJ cyberconley@aol.com=20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ------- I would start out assuming that they did NOT receive library usage = lessons. Teach library orientation. Handout a blank floor plan and = have them fill in the areas. You can even have them put an X in the = chair they were in. This will remind them of where things are and will = help you know how familiar with the library they are. =20 Next week discuss the OPAC, or whatever you call it in your building, = teach the finer points of searching and how to use the catalog to it's = best advantage. I always remind they that it is not a search engine, = you cannot ask it questions. =20 third week discuss Fiction, alphabetical order and how the shelves are = arranged. We shelve all the fiction books as part of the lesson. I = have 5 up at a time, they find where the book should go, and then raise = their hand. I come check them. If it's correct they pick up another = book from the stack, and when they figure out where it should be they = raise their hand so that when I'm looking for the next person to go, I = know they are ready. =20 4th week do the Non-fiction section. Really go over the dewey. Tell = them you don't even have it memorized, that's not the point, the point = is to know it so you can use it. I place a variety of dewey numbers on = a worksheet, they work together with me helping figuring out the lowest = number which they place on the top line in the next column. Down = through all of the numbers. We start with a number from each category, = 000, 100, 200 etc. If they are quick I have another one ready that is = trickier, it will be just from the 796. somethings so they can see how = the numbers after the points and the author letters determine where the = book should be. =20 5th week. I have a bunch of flash cards with dewey numbers on them. = First set are from all over the dewey numbers. We find a big spot on = the floor and lay them out in order. Everybody has a number and they = have to figure out where it goes. We usually will try to figure out who = would be next , or first, so that when we lay them down, they are = correct. Again, I also have a hard set. =20 Another way of doing this, I have two identical sets of each. I give = one set to two tables. We let them get them all laid out on the table = and then say go. First table finished is the winner. Do all the tables = once, then let the winning tables go against each other. Until you have = the winning table again. Then, the winning table plays me, with the = hard set of cards. We have great fun, and the students get into it, so = I've never had a discipline problem with that many students just sitting = and watching. =20 but, by now, you know what your students know about the basics of the = library and you can branch off from there. I've also done vocabulary = the first few weeks because I talk fast and sometimes they do not know = what I'm talking about. It has helped them use the correct words also = when asking for help. =20 Do not worry about what you do, anything will be better than just = sitting. Enjoy yourself, wander around and visit the teachers as much = as you can. This way you'll be seen by them, you'll be asked questions = about the collection and you can give great idea help. =20 The attachment is something that I put together for some teachers who = were completing their library certification program. =20 =20 Jean =20 R. Jean Gustafson Selah Jr. High Selah, WA -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ------- Week 1 - Book Care (went over on overhead), Read LIBRARY DRAGON, Book = Checkout Week 2 - Went over rules, procedures, POEM, Book Checkout Week 3 - Basic Scavenger Hunt - name of media specialist, who is the = first book in the biography section about. Week 4 - Go over answers for Scavenger Hunt, Book Checkout Week 5 - I am planning on going over call numbers for fiction books and = practice putting them in ABC order. May use book jackets and have them = physically get in order. Hope this helps. Basically my schedule looks like this for all grades first visit Library Rules Second Visit - review of rules for K & 1, AR for everyone else Third Visit - how to select the right book -AKA, why you can't possibly = "read" Harry Potter in the first grade 4th visit - review of rules then I go into story telling or lessons.
