Dear LM_NET ers

HIT: Online Searchable Database for books

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
My question posted on 2nd Sept 2003 was :=20
"I'm looking for a website that has a database of published books that =
can
be searched online using a simple form by author, title or keyword. I =
do
not want to use a general search engine as it throws back too much
irrelevant material."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I received over 20 responses in the following 24 hours ... solutions =
offered
included (summarised) :

- Both Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble have such a thing: =
http://amazon.com
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/

- Have you tried http://www.titlewave.com/

- Library of Congress http://lcweb.loc.gov

- This may not be exactly what you're looking for http://isbn.nu/

- EBSCO has a database called NOVELIST that would give you the type of
search you want.

- Follett: http://www.flr.follett.com/login/

- I would suggest you try one of the big vendors, Baker & Taylor, =
Follett,
Mackin, or BIP which Ingram uses as its own database. Some public =
libraries
have subscriptions to BIP and will let patrons have access sometimes =
from
schools. =20

- Do you have access to WorldCat via OCLC's First Search? We have =
access
through our state database funding project. That is exactly what you =
need

- TeachingBooks.net is a good resources such as you describe.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Many thanks for all of these suggestion .... I've already incorporated =
some
of the them in a webpage I'm writing in my site designed to support
librarians in International Schools at http://www.shambles.net/librarian

Any comments you can now offer to improve this particular page (content =
-
layout - bad links) would also be most welcome .. please remember 'under
construction'.=20

Proving again .. people are more powerful than machines!

Thanks

Chris
