I have succesfully taught keyboarding by dividing the class into groups. For Grades 3-8, I would start with a lesson on some library skill, dividde the class then each time we met one group would be doing keybording skill and the other would be working on whatever the project was. I made sure that the project was mutipart and interesting. For example : I had a class research who, where, what and how much it wold cost to have a birthday or anniversary party. They used the phone book ( for caterers, entertainment, party houses, etc.), Etiquet books for manners and party hints, encyclopedias for background on birthday and/or anniversary elebrations around the world, etc. Then the grop would get as much info at home as they could - call placec for rpices, etc. They even had to do a menu and get the costs of food. Then they would write up their full plan. Meanwhile, I alternated the grops doing research with the group doing keyboarding - Monday group one, Tuesday group two, etc. We did research projects on : celebrations, purchasing and raising a pet, wild animals, poetry, tall tales, fairy tales... I kept the groups going all year, after keyboarding we did Internet serches and using databases. K-2 Could read quietly or do a small project at the activity center while the rest did keyboarding. I would read a short story to K two times a week and have activites centers for them the rest of the week. Grades 1 and 2 would get a chapter of a story each day, then the groups. They loved it. The kids didn't mind that they could only do computer stuff on certain days. In fact, I think it helped as I could keep the grops small enough to hep those who were hesitant or needed individual help. By the way, I didn 't have any help - no aid, no asistant. Class sizes ranged from 19 - 29. They knew if they didn't behave, they would be in trouble with me and their teacher. Also, if the class got too rowdy, everyone had to sit still - no talking, no reading, no computer- nothing. They actually helped to police themselves. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl King" <cherylk@ITE.NET> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Sunday, September 07, 2003 3:14 AM Subject: Target: Can keyboarding be taught in a classroom w/only 3-5 computers? > Our school no longer has a computer lab, and efforts are being made > to place computers in the individual classrooms.
