This is the hit of responses I received from my original post asking about opinions and comparisons for buying a new mattress set. Several people requested a hit. Melissa Toner media specialist Idlewild Elementary Charlotte, NC mtoner8@yahoo.com I purchased a Restonic mattress and I absolutely love it. I bought the higher end one because I had been having some shoulder problems. For my son, I purchased a less expensive twin mattress set and his is also extremely comfortable. Best of luck! You're the one who has to sleep on it every night -- so it doesn't really matter what anyone else says. If the mattress has a warranty that you're comfortable with, that's good, too. ***** Mattress companies change "models" so fast, and have so many iterations of any one model (store brand names), that there's no way you can do a real comparison. Go to three reputable stores that sell different brands and listen to what the salesmen tell you. Ask intelligent questions. Make sure you lie on the mattresses you think you like for at least 15 minutes each. Consumer Reports has mattress articles every few years, but by the time the magazine is published, the models have changed. I bought a major brand, popular model and returned it within 2 months, dissatisfied with a flaw in it. They couldn't get a replacement. It had been discontinued! So, I bought another model. This is one area of manufacturing that still hasn't come under consumer control. ***** I had to laugh at your target, because my husband (of 28 yrs) and I have just finished a month or more of mattress shopping. We have decided that at our age it is important to have something good that we have never splurged on and had....a real good mattress. We decided that this was the hardest purchase to decide on. We will buy another car, but we will probably die on this mattress!! I looked at Consumer Reports and found an article in 97 or 98. I learned what to look for, but basically they said that when you get in the upper quality (over $600 or $700 mattresses) you are okay with any major brands. I think the major brands were Simmons, Sealy, and Serta. The rest they said depends on what you like in the feel. Consumer Reports said to lie on each one for at least 10 minutes in the positions you sleep in. We have lain on every bed in Jackson, Tn.!!!! They said the sag usually comes not from the springs, but from the pad. We wanted a pillow top. But I am glad we spread our shopping out over about 3 weeks because we found we changed our minds over that period of time as to what we wanted. We thought we wanted real "squishy" but found we really liked the firmer ones. My husband has back trouble and difficulty sleeping. We ended up with a Sterns and Foster pillowtop and paid about 1,000 or 1200 on sale. We have a regular or full just because we have the bedroom suit I grew up on. We do love our new mattress but it still took a week or so to decide that we do and break it in. Of course, I had to buy new sheets, comforter, etc. because it is so thick that nothing I had fit. We bought a 3 inch box springs because, otherwise, the bed would be way too high. Good luck and let me know what you decide. Sweet dreams! ***** If you can swing the cost, try a foam mattress. The most comfortable ever. ***** It is completely impossible to compare mattress brand because manufactureres put different names on different styles for each store. A Sealy "Quiet Sleep" at Sears may be a "Dream Puff" at Penny's. This is how they get around competitive price gouging. Good Luck. One more tip: If you buy a pillow top make sure it has pillows on both sides or you only get half the life out of your mattress. You can't turn it over. ***** Watch the thread count when comparing. The higher the count, the better quality and higher price. ***** In case you haven't received this response, try www.epinions.com I don't know if they have mattresses, but I like the idea of getting the opinions of actual users of a product. ***** I just researched and bought a queen sized Comfort Select mattress. It has an air chamber so you can control how firm or soft you want the mattress. The really good thing is that you never have to turn your mattress, and it comes with a 20 year warrantee. These mattresses are pricey, but I'm worth it. I've had too many uncomfortable nights. ***** __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
