Just discard them - unless you know someone who would enjoy the books. I
once had some books that were purchased by a teacher, who then left. The
books were given to me for the library. They were type of book that I call
"sugar-sweet"- pastel pictures, inane conversations, a story line about good
boys and girls that even a kindergartener would realize was unrealistic. I
had them in boxes in the back of the storage shelf but didn't mark them as
discards. Somehow I never did discard them. When I left they were still
there and the new librarian complained to the principal that I had left a
lot of books that were not processed - she was talking about these old ones.
So get rid of them right away - don't hang onto them for any reason!!

We've all probably done that at least once. When I was at an Elementary
school I noticed some books on the top shelf of the cabinets in my office.
One was a porn Garfield. Not appropriate at any level in schools. My aide
said the previous media specialist bought it because the review said,
"Garfield grows up" or something like that. Just get rid of the book and
don't feel guilty about "wasting" money.

What do you do when you buy a book based on a review that sounds great but
when you actually get the book, it is completely inappropriate for your
school? (We are a high school so passing it to an upper level in not an
option. Do you personally replace that copy with something appropriate and
just take it home or what?

Just sign me--the review was the best part of the book
