It's that time of year again when school boards start giving out the figures for next year's budget. Many schools are already being told that cuts will happen yet again. The following quote could be very useful. This quote is from Jim Trelease's book, The Read- Aloud Handbook 4th edition (1995) Paperback ISBN: 0140469710 page 146. In chapter 6, on Home, School, and Public Libraries, in a discussion about libraries and the budgeting for libraries he says: "Community and education decision makers, .... who cut or eliminate libraries are demonstrating how little they know about reading - and doing it publicly. For example, nearly everyone agrees that reading is the most important subject in school, since nearly all the other subjects rest upon it. And the research ... that shows the best readers in thirty-two nations came from the schools .... with the most library books. But the powers-that-be don't know this because they don't read professionally. So they cut the library budget or eliminate it entirely -- and still expect the scores to rise. That's like digging up the airport runways and expecting safe landings." Randi Louise Hermans BCTLA Second Vice-president: Advocacy Teacher-librarian East Chilliwack Elementary K-6 Chilliwack, B.C.
