Anne,
I do this every year. I "seed" the swap with several paperbacks that
have been donated and never processed. I allow kids to come back as often
as they like with their chits for the same number of books they brought
in. Some kids will trade for a book on Tuesday, read it Tuesday night and
come in and swap it for something else on Wednesday. That's fine with me.
I want to promote reading any way I can. Some years I've done the swap
school-wide, and some years I divided it into 5th and 6th one week, 7th
and 8th the next. In any event, I as the librarian have right of refusal
of any material I deem inappropriate for the swap.
This is a popular activity for those kids who buy a lot of paperbacks for
their home shelves.

Sandy
