I wasted a good part of a tree the other day, but it was worth it (and I did use scrap paper, I swear). But I got to read something hot off the press (released just March 25th by Penguin) on a topic which concerns us all -- copyright and fair use and the future of intellectual property on the Internet. The book is fairly US-oriented in its historical take on the subject - especially when the author gets into the case he brought before the Supreme Court about the constitutionality of Congress continuing to extend the length of the copyright period (was that what the original framers really intended?) - but it's about more, much more than just that. Even those of you abroad will find something of interest here. After all, the Internet is international. The U.S. is influential, but it doesn't control the world (not yet, at least...) By the way, Lessig is a law professor at Stanford with a very impressive resume behind him, but he's managed to write in a very accessible style. So check out: <<Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity>> by Lawrence Lessig I first heard about this book via the Librarian's Book Club (see forwarded message down below) -- which is also something that should interest you (if you don't already know about it). Anyway, I couldn't put Lessig's book down. It might not answer some of the nitty-gritty questions that get asked on LM_NET on a regular basis, but it will give you a framework within which to consider them. And my apologies if this information has already been posted. LM_NET is such a swift-moving stream that it's hard to keep track of what's gone past and what hasn't. -- Katie Day Primary School Librarian Dulwich International College Phuket, Thailand kday@dulwich.ac.th kbday@cscoms.com -----Original Message----- From: lbc-owner@creighton.edu [mailto:lbc-owner@creighton.edu] On Behalf Of Troy Johnson Sent: Thursday, April 01, 2004 4:08 AM To: lbc@creighton.edu Subject: [lbc] It's Official As of now the LBC is on a two month reading schedule. The April selection of "Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity" is now the book for April-May. The next book we will select will be for June-July. I have been reading "Free Culture" and finding it very interesting. I really do believe this book is a must read for all librarians. You can download a free pdf copy of the entire book at www.librariansbookclub.org <http://www.librariansbookclub.org/> .
