Thanks to all who responded. Here are the titles that were suggested:

Imani All Mine, by Connie Rose Porter
The First Part Last, by Angela Johnson
Push, by Sapphire (tough content, like Coldest Winter. . .)
Like Sisters on the Homefront, by Rita Williams-Garcia (purchase edition
targeting older audience, with woman holding baby on cover)
Toning the Sweep, by Angela Johnson

Have you purchased the Bluford High series by Townsend Press
<www.townsendpress.com> ?
The kids just love them - buy at least five copies of the whole series of
ten and they will not be on the shelves all year...

How about Angela Johnson books? They catch on pretty well here. I'm a
bit put off by the Tyree stuff, but many do like him. I would not
purchase anymore of his work for the library.

How about Dancer by Lorri Hewett? It is about ballet dancing

Virginia Euer Wolff's books Make Lemonade & True Believer - not as popular
here as Draper's books, but those who have read them say they are good.

I haven't read them but our system (ocean county library) got Jackie
Hardrick's two Imani books; the second got a good review from
booklist. I cannot find her website right but it had good
information about the books. Hardrick is also a local NJ author...
found her website, its at http://www.authorsden.com/jackiehardrick

Imani all mine by Porter

America & life is funny by ER Frank

Push by Sapphire...maybe....I haven't read Coldest Winter (except
I'm fairly certain we have it adult not ya).  Push we have in both;
it deals with incest, aids, teen pregnancy, illiteracy, but it is a
wonderful book. But, with it being public high school, you may want
to read it at the public library first.

Anything by rita Williams-garcia, jacqueline woodson, rosa guy, or
janet macdonald (but macdonald may be a bit young for them)

kindred by octavia butler...great time travel book

while han nolan's born blue is not about a girl who is african
american, it is about an abused / neglected girl who believes she is
african american ... its a great book

Our girls like the books by Omar Tyree and Connie Briscoe, but be aware they
are easily as "adult" as Coldest Winter. For something a little milder --
try books by Angela Johnson, Jacqueline Woodson, Nikki Grimes and Walter
Dean Myers. All these authors write for children too, so you need to check
grade levels. I also like the mysteries by Walter Moseley and Barbara
Neely. Some specific suggestions are below:

Hush by Jacqueline Woodson
First Part Last by Angela Johnson
Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes
Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers
Blanche Among the Talented Tenth by Barbara Neely

"Push" is popluar here. It is by Sapphire (pseud).
I know what you mean about "the Coldest Winter Ever"
My girls like Omar Tyree especailly "Flyy Girl"
"Premature Pleasures" is popular here. It is available on www.Amazon.com
I got our copy at a local Black bookstore. The author came to our
school.
