I apologize for posting to the whole list. Seconds after I hit the
delete button, a title came to me and I couldn't find the original
request in my trash. Anyway, take a look at "The Farming of Bones" by
Edwidge Dandicat. It is a graphic fictional account of the slaughter of
Haitians by Dominicans in (I think) the 1930s. Very moving.

Help, I can't seem to find this exact incident in any copyright literature.
A teacher wants to scan into PowerPoint and entire book, O is for Orca, to
use with the study of Washington. This way all the students can see the book
on a larger screen and then they can take the Reading COunts test for it.
He is using the presentation instead of reading it to the class. He did not
ask me directly but it has me worried. Is this an OK use, if he is using it
as a presentation of the book.

Subject: Re: Taking work home

I just had to chime in. No I don't write reports or give grades but here
is my home work.
Reading, reading, reading- not just children's books which of course are
priority, professional material like Knowledge Quest, Reading teacher,
Hornbook, Voya, Library Journal , School Library Journal.Instructor,
Teaching k-8.
Also book ordering, collection development, summer reading lists,
newsletters to parents, memos to teachers, responding to my e-mail,
returning voicemail messages, prepping for classes, and researching
appropriate websites and materials to support individual classroom
curriculum requests.

I don't think I am in competition with classroom teachers or a case of
oh poor me look how hard I work. I love my job and am grateful that I
love the work I take home. I also have a really great rolling backpack
that I lug all that stuff back and forth in.

She might like- Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot:
Being the Correspondence of Two Young Ladies of Quality Regarding
Various Magical Scandals in London and the Country by Patricia C.
Wrede. It is more YA and of a higher reading level than the books that
you have mentioned but a truly delicious read.

Subject: Please help me regain my belief in my sanity!

Hi,

I know I'm a veteran.... and have been at this for a long time, but I'm =
fearful that I have really lost it.
About 3 or 4 days ago (maybe it was longer, time flies because I'm having =
so much fun!)so one posted a great science site that was had to do with =
the physics -- the possible and impossible... I think that is how one =
could describe it! I thought the site was great, thought I forwarded it to =
my science collegues, and thought I saved it in my file with other science =
references.

But... I must have only THOUGHT about doing both.... and did neither....but=
DID delete it. So of course, I thought that I could go to the archives =
and easily find it. WRONG! It must have been under a subject heading =
that I don't recognize. Unfortunately, I told the science teachers about =
the site and they think it sounds great and would like to see it. I =
beginning to wonder whether the site was ever posted... but surely I =
didn't dream it, I'm not scientifically inclined and if I were to dream =
this, it would have been more of a nightmare than a dream!=20

Can anyone help me restore my faith in my own competency? If you recall =
or can help me with this site, please send it to me off the listserv.... =
it's humiliating enough to find myself in this position.

Thanks for being kind to the addle-minded!
Readingly yours,
Chris

Subject: Re: MID: Tom Sawyer okay for 6th grade?

Thanks for all the replies concerning the appropriateness of reading The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer to a 6th grade class. Your advice was extremely
helpful.

I forwarded about 12 reponses to my 6th grade teacher and I'm anxious to see
what she will decide to do. Your words of caution or your words of
encouragement were very intriguing. Most felt it would be appropriate, but
a few thought it would be best to use it for students older than 6th grade.
There was one definite "no" and some said it was successfully used in 3rd,
4th and 5th grades.

Very interesting.

Thanks to all who replied!
