Shonda, you left off the 2X2 list in your run-down on the lists in Texas. What
you're planning on doing is a great idea, and I applaud your plans. Please include
the reasons to support the 2X2 list in your study. Right off the top of my head I
can say a reason to promote that particular list is that it is the most
parental-involvement list we have, since the list is especially designed to promote
reading-aloud by parents. The 2X2 web page on the TLA site even lists three
activities for each title that the parents can share with their children to extend
the pleasure of each book.
I've been a member of the Tayshas committee, and I can testify as to the
thorough screening that each book on each of the lists must survive in order to end
up on one of the lists in Texas. Thousands of books enter the screening process,
and a year later 20 of the very best make the list (or 60+ for the Tayshas). I
tell my classes and colleagues "The best new books in your library are the
__________books," and I KNOW that is true. That right there is the main reason to
support the lists. I presume every librarian wants the best new books in her
library.
I look forward to your completed study.

Subject: TARGET: Why Support State Reading Lists

I am compiling a hand-out for a county-wide librarian's meeting in September
that will specifically address the reasons why librarians (in our county /
state) should support the state reading lists (purchase the books, promote
the selections made, provide activities for students relating to the books,
become involved in the process of reviewing / selecting / nominating books
for the lists).

During a recent meeting a board member from our county librarian's committee
noted that many of their school's librarians were not supporting
(purchasing) the state's recommended reading lists [we have Bluebonnet
(elementary), Lone Star (6-8 grades) and Tayshas (9-12 grades)]. This was
of concern to us because of the great tradition that the state has in
providing our students with the opportunity to read a variety of materials
from outstanding authors and then allowing our students to select their
favorites among those choices.

I would be interested in providing our membership with valid ideas or
suggestions from members of LM_NET who do support their state's reading
lists (including those who monitor from Texas). What do you think are some
valid reasons to support these types of programs and why do you promote
them? Why are these lists important to your programs and what evidence have
you seen that the selections made by librarians provide students with
exceptional qualities of literature?

This information will be compiled in a hand-out for the general meeting in
September. In addition, I will also post the handout in a .pdf format on
the county librarian's website in September. ( If you would like to bookmark
this website now to check back later, please feel free to do so:
http://www.homestead.com/tcasl )

Please send your comments, suggestions, ideas, and experiences to me
off-list. I will ask if I may include your suggestions in our handout for
the September meeting.

Thanks!
