To anyone who is contemplating a Ph.D. in Information Management & Technology at one of the top doctoral programs in the U.S. and is aspiring to a career in higher education, please keep reading: The Ph.D. program of the Syracuse University School of Information Studies has a long and proud history of educating the future professoriate for service and leadership in library schools throughout the country. Since its inception in 1969, the majority of the program's graduates have taken faculty positions in leading library schools in the US and around the world. However, in recent years, we have seen decreasing numbers of graduates entering the ranks of libraryfaculty. This trend, reflective of changing enrollment in library doctoral programs nationwide, foreshadows an urgent shortage of library faculty. Library schools across the country are experiencing difficulty in hiring, particularly for cataloging, youth services and school library media specializations. The Future Professoriate for Librarianship Project in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University integrates preparation for teaching with targeted library research activities into the Ph.D. experience to help Ph.D. students successfully make the transition to becoming assistant professors in Library Science programs. This project establishes a program focused on recruiting and enculturating doctoral students at Syracuse University to library research, teaching, and service. Funding from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) has provided five fellowships (full tuition, stipend and benefits) for PhD students pursuing the Librarianship topics mentioned above. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. For more information, contact the program director, Kevin Crowston, crowston@syr.edu. Ruth V.
