I don't think it's the topic that is controversial but rather the fact that
the professor is "writing a book" about a subject that you are researching
for her.

I now realize that this is a compilation of essays from various individuals
on the subject of media literacy, but I think that the impression initially
presented was that someone outside the field of library science was asking a
graduate student to write a book about a subject that the professor wasn't
capable of writing herself (for whatever reason).  Obviously, the professor
is using various perspectives to present the topic and how it is perceived /
taught.

Perhaps your work with the professor will lead you to write your own
in-depth book on this topic for each of us within the profession to use
later.
