_David and the Phoenix_ by Edward Ormondroyd. First published in 1957 and reprinted in 2000(Purple House Press). I remember reading it in 3rd or 4th grade (58-59) and the next books I can remember reading were Sewell's _Black Beauty in 4th or 5th and Hemingway's _Old Man and the Sea_ in the 6th grade. So it must have made quite an impression! I reread Phoenix when republished and it was an interesting revisit. It is a bit heavy handed. Since I am 50 now, this puts it back to the early 1960's." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
