I would like to suggest that we ALL install and keep up to date (this last
part is critical) a good virus checker. Norton, Dr. Solomon, McAfee,
AVS... many are available, but the central points are to have them check
*both* incoming and outgoing mail, and that you keep the virus definition
files up to date. Most will do this automatically, but if not, check at
least weekly for updates on the manufacturer's site.
Just now, logging into lm-net, I got 12 messages, three of which were
infected with virii. All three had spoofed (i.e. false) sender address
ending in .syr.edu
Never use the 'preview' function on your email reader, which actually opens
the message, though it only shows you the header and subject information in
most cases.
Never open attachments that have not been scanned by your up to date
anti-virus program, even if it appears to be coming from someone or some
organization you know.
All three of these infected emails had subject lines with wording about
'site changes', the better to trap you into opening them and infecting your
computer.
Its a jungle out there.
