I have read several posts in the past about having students "adopt" a
shelf and then maintain it by checking the books on it to see it they are in
shelf order in the correct spot, are turned with the spine facing out, etc. Today
I decided that I had to try this after looking at the disaster left following
successive fourth and fifth graders checking out. Some books even ended up on
the floor! The non fiction books (especially the drawing books) are the worst!
This happened despite my regular efforts to instruct the students in how to
leave the books in the order in which they were originally found.
If you have done this, could you please respond to me at my address below
and answer the following: 1- How did you assign shelves? (Did you allow them
to pick their shelf or did you assign according to their ability to understand
decimals, or lack of it?)
2- How often do the students come in to maintain their shelf? 3- Did you
recognize their efforts with a "This shelf is maintained by_____" label on it? 4-
How much preparation did you do before letting them begin their tasks?
I have already spoken to one fifth grade teacher about doing this and she
was really enthusiastic about it providing students with hands on experience
with ordering decimals (helping them prepare for our state's FCAT tests, of
course!)
Thanks for any comments you send my way!
