The interesting thing about that article is that many of the library users
are migrants and immigrants interested in learning English and becoming
Americans. These are just the sort of people that free public libraries were
set up to serve. The public libraries of Salinas are truly "the poor man's
university". However the community feels that it cannot afford them. How
sad....
