Sometimes I like to summarize discussions, sort of a thinking out lound
thing. =

It would seem that most of us agree that BOTH print and online are useful=

with people on both sides as to which is more useful. The constraints tha=
t
come up are;

Cost, assessability and ease of use.

Cost -- between print and online maybe not so much different EXCEPT that
online has to be renewed each and every year while print you have as long=

as the books hold together. This is an important factor in my decision to=

buy print and keep my cd-rom version going.

Assessability -- 20 to 30 individual volumes, but only one copy of each
volume verses minimal number of work stations. Assessable only at school
verses assessable to students at home. I have the luxory of enough
workstations so would like to have online if my budget would allow.

Ease of use -- each has advantages. While my preference is to go to the
print for fast information, many of my students do not see print as faste=
r.
I can often get students to use print especially when having problems wit=
h
finding via the internet, but my students simply do not use print as firs=
t
choice. At some point I think we have to acknowledge their preference. If=
 I
always insist on print, they may well tune me out because they know they
can find it without me. But if I help them find information, sometimes
using print I have a better chance.

Concerning "free" online encyclopedias, I have noticed that they are not =
as
common as they used to be. While I don't have an online "encyclopedia" I =
do
have online service from another vendor who includes in their database
information from print resouces. I point these out to students.
