For print, just replace copy/paste with photocopy/retype. Or copy paragraphs for notes, the tiny writing on 3x5 cards syndrome. For both online and paper, there is the ever popular rewrite paragraphs while reading / copy-paste and change a few words. That one makes for interesting reading when 2-3 resources are required. In either case, what is really missing are notetaking skills and a defined purpose of research which usually means lack of a synthesis component in the project. I think it would be well worth reading Dr. Kuhlthau's writings about Information Search Process (ISP) (http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/%7Ekuhlthau/Search%20Process.htm) for aspects about how students react to research projects, how they are learning, and how we can best match instruction. In line with teaching information skills, most specifically note-taking = strategies in this instance, I find that by limiting students to print = encyclopedia's they are encouraged firstly to share information with = others, and to restrict their note-taking to main ideas, phrases, key = words, etc. Thereby, encouraging students to consolidate the = information they find, rather than just copy the words out and take = nothing on board.=20 Cheers, Amy Spencer TL-to-be CSU Tasmania, Australia david_amy@optusnet.com.au OR amz0020@yahoo.com.au --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
