Yup, that is what I meant. The set with lessons, etc. The fifth graders
really got into the video also.

Agree on the second point. Also make sure to lobby for additional permanent
funding. A $$/student or a set minimum + extra $$ if enrollment goes over a
certain number. A great help with long term planning and budgeting.

And be glad your principal is aware of the importance of the library as a
part of the learning process. A great ally.

Hello-
I am replying to the whole group because I must have deleted the
original posting from the librarian having a budget of $600 to spend on her
elementary library. I second Robert Eiffert's endorsement of World Almanacs
for Kids. I'd like to add that these can be purchased as a kit including a
video, blackline masters, 15 paperback student copies, plus 1 hardback copy
from World Almanac Education. I think the kit is well worth it. If 15 is
not enough for a class set, additional paperbacks can be purchased for a
reduced price or perhaps having 1 almanac for every 2 students working as
partners would do it for you. For an additional fee, World Almanac
Education will coat the paperbacks to make them more durable. However, my
assistant and I covered ours more economically with clear tape purchased
from Demco and they seem very well protected. (In fact, we cover all of our
paperbacks in this manner.) When you are able to purchase an updated set of
almanacs, you can allow your first set to circulate. The kids love them!
$600 is a very small budget. You might want to see what you can do to
stretch it or add to it. Suggestions: Check out thrift stores, yard sales,
and Friends of Public Library sales Start collecting Box Tops for Education
and publicize heavily - every Box Top your kids/parents/co-workers throw
away is worth 10 cents. Ask if you can hold a book fair. Ask for donations
of gently used books.
