Thank you so much to all of the folks who responded to my book voting question! I am constantly amazed and impressed by this groups knowledge and willingness to share! We have the list for next year before the end of the school year so I am sure to order them and have them ready to go at the beginning of the school year. I then schedule a time with the teachers (in Texas 3-6th grades participate) of those grades during their reading time. I do a book talk (20-30 min.) of the whole list. Then, I display them in a separate area of the library and try to remind them to keep reading from those as they come into the library. If they have read 5 or more by January (when we vote this year), they get to vote. I make up a bookmark with a list of all the books that year, laminate them and give them out. We also have a log the teachers can use to keep track of what each student has read. When it's time to vote, I just turn my bookmark into a voting ballot and send them to the teachers. It's up to them to make sure only children who have read at least five vote. Just this year, schools can vote only on-line and voting ended last week. In March, they'll announce the winner at our library conference. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I am doing the same project in PA with my fourth graders. I have been reading a book from the list almost every week they visit the library for their book selection class. Once I realized I won't have enough time to read all of the books, I sent about 5 of them to their classrooms and asked their teachers to pass them around and read them during their own read aloud time. They were more than willing since they are always looking for things to read. I also found that even though it is a group of books recommended for k-2 or 3, the 4th graders have loved it! We should be able to finish up by the end of Feb. and get our votes in by the beginning of March. The week before "voting day" I will have all the books nominated on display (not available for check out) and encourage the kids to visit the library on their library passes to see if there are any books they might have missed due to absense etc. On voting day I'll plan a longer class (we also have flexible schedule in addition to a fixed schedule for book selection) and I'll have all the books out on display and do a quick booktalk to refresh their memory. Hopefully both of these ideas will spark their memory! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ just finished sharing all the primary VYRs with K - 2 students at my school and they voted last week. This is my first year as a media specialist and our school is being renovated, so there is no library for students to visit. I visited classrooms and shared a book each week. I started in October and finished reading the last book in January. Each week, I always brought the books I had already read and after sharing the new book, we would have a pretend vote (thumbs up if they liked). As students voted, they went back to their desks. On voting day, I took about 1 minute to review each book. I also made a "Voting Booth" out of an old two-shelved computer table by putting bulletin board paper around the back and sides and I put a sign on the back "Vote here for your favorite Virginia Young Reader book" rolled it into each classroom. I made a voting "box" for each book and attached a picture of the book cover. Then I gave each student a voting "bead" (colored marble) and they went behind the "booth" and put their bead in the box with their favorite book on it. I tallied up the votes after each visit. I plan on doing it the same way next year - only in the library. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In CA we have 5 picture books nominated for the California Young Reader Medal. I read one book a week and choose the shortest book for the last week. On that day I have a voting booth - a puppet theater borrowed form a first grade teacher. There are 5 cans with a picture of one book on each can. There's a slit in the lid. Each student gets a strip of paper with his/her room number on it. Every student casts a "secret" ballot. At the end of each day I record the votes and when all classes have voted I put up a big chart showing how many votes each book got by class, grade level, and then total. The kids look forward to this every year. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We use the selections as read alouds in the months preceding the vote. Right before voting we just do a quick discussion and picture walk through the books, then I put each book at a "voting station" on our tables. Students sit at the table with the book they vote for and we tally the vote. they usually remember the cover immediately. So far they have loved all of them this year. I wasn't expecting such a positive response to Mapping Penny's World. They surprised me! I try to have an extending activity for each book. I would love to have someone to share activities with if you are interested. I had a bear paper puppet with Bear Snores On, a life cycle activity with Waiting for Wings, we drew library maps with Mapping Penny's World. We will have a writing/drawing activity with The Sick Day. Haven't otten any farther than that! For grades 3-5 I do a simple ballot. I read aloud their picture books, booktalk the rest of the selections and post a rating sheet for them to rate the books they read between 1-5. Any who has read at least 4 gets a ballot to vote for the favorite. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Patricia Hamilton Ritchie Elementary New Baltimore, VA phamilton@fcps1.org =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
