We do the Wisconsin Golden Archer award which is similar. For the
primary
age group I read half one week, and the other half the next week. When
we
vote, I hold up each book and give a sentence or two to refresh their
memories. I show all the books individually before we actually vote so
they should all be fresh in their minds. It seems to work well.

We just finished our Bluebonnet Voting here in Texas. This week I used a
jeopardy style game to "review" the books on the list. At the end, we
cast our votes.

To get the picture books read faster, I have circulated them among the
classroom teachers and kept a list of what they have read. After each
class has read the required number, they vote with me in the media
center. I have a copy of each book or a picture of the cover to refresh
their memory.

As you read, you could make a chart of title, author
and simple plot or character comments. Or you could
just use published reviews clipped to a chart of some
sort.

We have the California Young Reader Medal Books here. When I was at the
schools, I would read one book each week to all classes. There were 5
books nominated. Week 6, I would recap all 5 books and they voted for
their favorite. The books were kept in the library, so if a student was
absent, s/he could read it the following week, or come in at recess or
lunch to read any that may have been missed.

I also made a chart, so we could keep a tally of the number of votes
each book had, as the classes voted. This really kept the interest up.
The students could see if their favorite book was winning. It was really
lots of fun!
