Doug Johnson has written the best I have seen. "Weed", in Library Media
Connection, Aug 2003. The Head for the Edge column. Major points:  "Rids
your collections of sexist, racist and just plain inaccurate materials",
"Makes the good stuff easier to find and more appealing", and very
importantly "Sends the message that the library may not be adequately
funded."

It is available through Ebsco's Prof Dev collection.
