GEN: February Weed of the Month

The February 2004 topic for Weed of the Month is: The Civil War.

There are two things school libraries can count on about the topic of=20
the Civil War: 1) materials will be in demand for school assigned=20
reports and 2) publishers will continue to supply the market with a=20
stream of new titles each year. You probably have a relatively large=20
selection of titles on the Civil War -=97 many of them well-worn from=20
years of reports. The trick is to weed the old and update this section=20=

without disruption to students and teachers.

A brief explanation of Weed of the Month for new LM_NET members: The=20
SUNLINK Weed of the Month began in September, 1997, from an idea by=20
Mike Eisenberg co-owner of LM_NET, and as an effort to help provide=20
Florida's School Library Media Specialists with guidelines and=20
suggestions for weeding their collections a little at a time as well as=20=

adding quality materials. A section of the collection is identified=20
each month during the school year (September through May) as a weeding=20=

target.
