Good points. That is precisely why I am very careful about making blanket statements such as _ Weed everything that hasn't circulated in x number of years...or weed all materials before a certain date, etc. I have learned that what was "dead" material at one point can resurface years later as an important part of the curriculum. Curriculum and curriculum alone should be our guide - which means we have to know trends, history, and possibilities. I have novels, for example, on the shelf that haven't circulated in over 15 years but I hang on to them (if they are anyway decent literature) and try to find creative methods to push them.
