Assuming that 1, and 2 are true below, why not have your student =
assistants
make neat book covers for the books out of paper bags or something =
fancier,
and attach special labels to them that say something like "Primary =
Source",
"A Look Back", or "Historical Item". Then do put them in a special =
section
by Dewey number with a prefix of HIS for historical, and some fancy =
signs
made on the computer that identify the purpose of the section. That way =
they
would be attractive in their own way. As for item 4, you never know what
might be added to the curriculum in future years. That's when you might =
need
these.

That is how I'm going to handle it. And, in fact, since I did my most
extensive weeding last year and now wish I had kept a few titles like Ed =
and
the others have mentioned in this thread I'm going to ask other district
librarians to consider passing on their copies of such titles to me if =
and
when they choose to weed them.

I definitely don't think that old or shabby titles should be left mixed =
in
with the main collection. It needs to look shiny, new and appealing.

This is a very interesting thread!

As a prolific library weeder in my 40 school districts, I need to make =
some
comments about weeding school libraries. First, I agree that the =
librarian
needs to know their collection thoroughly, and know the teachers and
students that frequent the library. They, too need to collaborate often
with teachers on curriculum and curricular materials. I do not agree =
that
old sexist, out-dated materials must be kept for that unexpected need =
for
primary sources unless 1. the library has plenty of space and the =
shelves
are not crowded already, 2. the library has no source for interlibrary
loan, 3. the library does not have a shabby look because of the "primary
sources" that are tattered and nasty looking 4. the library has =
teaching
curriculum to help students distinguish primary research sources from
current factual material. Kansas has the Kansas Library Catalog (KLC)
<http://ksuc-agent.auto-graphics.com/agent/ for ILL purposes. Also, we =
have
electronic ILL (or even ALA forms) that allow one to get primary sources =
as
needed. WorldCat from OCLC allows searching for these kinds of books =
too.
A well weeded library does increase circulation and an "incase" attitude =
can
lead to a cluttered library.
