Weeding has worked for me to justify additional funding. I fiercely weeded
my collection last year, and then checked the age of each major section
using our Follett system. I've been to our Educational Foundation twice
since then to request grants of about $1,000 each using the justification
that I weeded the collection and that the average of age of a given section
is still (for instance) 1978. Both times I got the grants, and I have no
doubts that I can continue asking for grants as long as they see an
improving library and receive the statistics to back up my request. I also
had the first set of new books they purchased on display when they met to
consider my request for the second grant, and I think that helped.

I don't know how much this type of justification would help to increase
funding from local, state and federal sources, but it's definitely part of
seeming prepared when you go after grants!

How about some discussion on the third point in Doug Johnson's 'Weed'
article:
"Sends the message that the library may not be adequately funded."

Article is in Library Media
Connection, Aug 2003. The Head for the Edge column. It is available through
Ebsco's Prof Dev collection.

I would hope it is being discussed in LMS programs. I know there is
anecdotal evidence about revitalizing collections. Copyright date averages
plays a part in the first Information Power as well as various state impact
studies.

Hi folks,

For what it's worth, a column of mine on weeding was published in the 2003
Sept/Oct Library Media Connection magazine. If you are interested in a copy
of the column, let me know. It does contain some weeding rationales and
tips.

All the best from a snowy Minnesota,

Doug
