We do require summer reading in grades 1-12. There are lists of the books
that students must read that are compiled by teachers. These books are then
incorporated in the curriculum during the fall (classroom activities,
projects, etc.) by each teacher. Some teachers in the high school have only
2-3 books while the AP courses have a few additional titles to read. The
elementary students usually have a longer list and then by the 4-5 grades,
they have 4-5 titles that must be read.

We are also re-thinking this situation since most students "read" their
books a week before school starts (which shows, especially when parents come
in the library two weeks before school starts asking for a book on the list
to be checked out in their child's name and we haven't even opened the
library for circulation yet.)

We are thinking about a "One Book, One Campus" program where we use the
Nancy Pearl techniques of reading a specific book at the middle school /
high school level, but we haven't investigated much because the teachers
want the students to be prepared to go into their classes with the books
read and ready to begin. The problem is, this isn't happening now, so if we
can do something to alleviate the requirements of reading what the "teachers
want" and substitute it with a program that allows the students to read what
they want, then we might have students reading over the summer. One school
nearby did this recently with Lance Armstrong's book, "It's Not About the
Bike" and had success. Unfortunately, I think this idea is far from
blossoming on our campus.
