Wow! I couldn't ask for better suggestions! Thanks to everyone. Here are
all the responses to my request.

"A great source for monthly bulletin board ideas is the magazine Library
Sparks. This month's bulletin says "Happy "New Read!" It features a Father
Time book, a clock and a few other things.

"I get my best ideas from bookmarks. Just blow them up, put them on an
opaque projector and trace them onto bulletin board paper. I use chalk
almost exclusively since it's easy to correct mistakes. I also use
greeting cards, wrapping paper, anything I can find with a reading theme
to blow up to bulletin board size.

"Jan Brett's website, www.janbrett.com, has a lot of printable graphics
including bulletin board borders. My new source of b-board inspiration
is the magazine Library Sparks. The price is steep, $59 I think, but
worth it to me. Each month features b-board ideas shown in color and
individual blackline pieces to enlarge via overhead. Mag also has
interesting themes for each month, with the books to accompany the unit.

"I use the Carson-Dellosa books or coloring books to find pictures that go
with the slogan to blow up on the overhead. For example, one idea was "Dig
up a good book!" I found a picture of a dog digging, blew it up and on the
bones he was unburying (is that a word?) I had the kids brainstorm great dog
books.

1) Banner: "Fall Into a Good Book"- Pictures of trees done by children in
art, paper leaves along the shelves, and books about seasons & fall standing
on the shelves.
2) Banner: "Oakside Loves to Read"- Photographs taken with digital camera of
administration and faculty reading their favorite children's book, and the
actual book on the shelf in front of the picture.
3) Banner: "Reading is Cool!" - Cut-out snowflakes done by the children,
snowmen sitting on the shelves and books about snow, the artic and artic
animals.
4) In the planning stages is an Eric Carle display- His books, and the book
that a class put together in the style of Eric Carle.

"Both Upstart / Highsmith have some really cute bulletin board kits if you
have money to spend. Most are theme related. Their website is

ogId=10001&storeId=10001&langId=-1&page=mall. You might also try Demco.

"I don't have websites to suggest, but in my first year I had a very
inexpensive bulletin board that the kids really enjoyed. It was simple - a
calendar with various dates and facts. I used the monthly posting to LM_NET
for some of the information. I also used a website called brownielocks.com
for unusual dates. The kids got a kick of knowing when "National Hot Dog
Day" was. I also included author, illustrator, and celebrity birthdays, and
would add the birthday of any child who asked me to.

There was always a crowd around the board for the first week of the month
and I noticed kids looking at it throughout the month. You could scan the
covers of books written or illustrated by authors/illustrators born during
the month if you have more room to fill. Our local BOCES also has an
ellison machine and we can get free seasonal cutouts...maybe you have access
to something similar to embellish it a little.
