Yes, definitely. I have the Senior High Catalog, as well as the Middle
School, Junior High, and Public Library Catalog. (Our lower school
librarian subscribes to the Elementary Catalog.)

I feel that these are great tools to use to select materials that you might
have missed along the way or to help you locate materials for subject areas
that you may not be as knowledgeable about. I also believe that they serve
well as an indicator of whether the materials that are on your shelves now
are useful, especially if they haven't been touched in ten years!

I had all of the catalogs out this summer as I weeded my collection and
those books that I pulled for weeding (not circulating, worn, and dated)
were easily tossed when I compared them with the catalog's selected
materials. Although I did keep some materials that were used for classroom
assignments and which were not listed in the books, it allowed me to see
what could be removed easily. So far no one has missed the items that I've
weeded but many have noticed the newer materials that have been added.

My favorite thing about the catalog is that when I receive updates, I can
easily check to see if I have been keeping up with the book reviews. The
last update was very exciting for me because I had been working hard to add
newer materials to our collection. When I checked the catalog, I realized
that I had already added many of the books listed there. This made me feel
better about the choices that I had made and confirmed that catalog helps to
guide librarians to some of the best materials out there for students /
patrons.

With tons of choices for collection development, I would definitely say that
the H.W. Wilson catalogs are a mainstay for any library.
