I think that when you address the selection of materials regarding religion
you must not only consider your community standards (what types of religions
are represented at your school and what are the majority of beliefs held
regarding those religions), but also that you balance your collection with a
variety of materials that give various religious beliefs (in brief and
historical perspectives). In my library, I have added materials relating to
the persons involved in "building the religion," as well as various holy
books that might be referred to in these religions (if they are available).

I have recently added several different religious materials which discuss
the history of the religion, beliefs, ceremonies, etc. because we have a
"Comparative Religions" class for our high school students (no, we are not a
religious school). I chose these based upon professional review sources
(journals, Wilson catalogs, etc.) and tried to balance them to include
"pagan" religions as well (Wicca, voodoo, druidism, etc.).

It was interesting that a recent speaker for the Comparative Religions class
was browsing our library collection and did not become "offended" at the
religious works (in the 200's) but rather by the historical works (900's)
that we had available for our World History classes. Luckily, I also had
books that he "agreed with" on the shelves, so I guess I balanced that area
too!

Here's a link to perhaps get started in researching what you might want to
do when you develop a religious section to your library (it's a university
website, but you can still provide some of the same structure at the high
school level). http://www.bu.edu/library/collections/cdrelig.html

Here's a link to other links relating to religions:

Here's another link to some ideas that might be used at a high school level
based upon "community standards" and religious works / collection
development: http://www.webrary.org/inside/colldevadult200.html

behalf of a supt. in a neighboring district. Whew! ---topic is not in my
normal train of thought. I did a quick check on the AASL web site and my
own state's web site and of course found some more general documents
(freedom to read etc).
