This is a very tardy hit but at last with the help of a snow day it's
getting done. Lots of fingerplay rhymes I didn't know and several
variations on criss-cross applesauce were suggested.
----

Criss cross applesause (legs crossed, hands in lap)
---
We say: criss cross applesauce, spoons in the bowl. Silly but effective.
---
The teachers in our school say this rhyme to their students PK-2nd grade.

Criss-cross applesauce,
pockets on the floor.
*** Fold your hands in your lap,
so you can hear some more.***

***I am not sure if the last sentence is exactly correct, but it is pretty
much in line with what the teachers say to the students. If the students
forget and begin to kneel during storytime, all I have to say is
"criss-cross" and the students sit down correctly. I hope this helps.

---

This may not be active enough. We always say:
Criss cross applesauce
Hands in you lap.

or...

1-2-3
Eyes on me.

---

For my k's and first graders, I use this rhyme that I've adapted through
the years to prepare them for storytime

open them (hands)
shut them
open them
shut them
give a little clap, clap, clap
open them
shut them
open them
shut them
put them in your lap, lap, lap
zip your lips, lips, lips
and stay on your patootie, tootie, tootie

(at first teaching, this brings great giggles because patootie is your
bottom but they LOVE the funny word. I have even taken it a step further
when I have particularly wiggly K's and I say PLANT your patootie. Hope
it works for you--usually by second grade, they understand behavior and
there aren't any issues. But often they still beg to say the rhyme for
old time sake. Or sometimes I tell them they are too old for that baby
rhyme, but if they don't get it together, we'll have to do it.

---
This is the finger play I use with my students:

On my head, my hands I place
On my shoulders, on my face
Then I reach them up SO HIGH
Gently flying through the sky,
Then I clap them, ONE, TWO, THREE!
Then I fold them silently.
And we are ready for our story.

After a week or two with me starting each line and having them repeat,
they have it down pat. I even can settle them down by just putting my
hands on top of my head--they know we're ready to start our storytime!
Sometimes I just do the hand motions as they recite it. Just make sure
you emphasize "GENTLY flying through the sky" so that someone's arms don't
smack into someone else's head!! lol

--
Use with appropriate actions:

Sometimes my hands are at my side
Then behind my back they hide
Sometimes I wiggle fingers so
Shake them fast, shake them slow
Sometimes my hands go clap, clap, clap,
Then I res them in my lap
Now they're quiet as quiet can be
Because it's story time you see.

---
I settle my younger students with the following rhyme and actions:

Sometimes I lay my hands at my sides,
Sometimes behind my back they hide. (put hands behind back)
Sometimes my hand go clap, clap, clap
And now I lay them in my lap.
Now, they're quiet, as quiet can be (put finger to lips, and whisper)
Because it's listening time you see! (motion with hand to the ear)
