Hello..

I am a MLS student and for my first lesson plan project (in a
library), the librarian (Ms. Reich) made a good point... She
suggested closure at the door (a wonderful accidental pun), that is
to ask the students about what they had just learned (an informal,
verbal quiz).

I don't have much of an opinion on the grading, but it is good to
call attention to what has just been taught (and that the students
know that information, not because of their geography teacher, but
because of their librarian)

Another Librarian (Ms. Gierke) puts out a newsletter listing what the
students are doing in her library.

Neither of these measures proves that the students have acquired some
knowledge, but it does show students and parents that things are
being taught in school.

I agree with the thought of calculating all the grades at the end of
the semester, but like so many things, having a 'hammer' (like the
fear of a bad grade) can be an incentive. Perhaps the easiest (I am
nothing if not lazy) would be to have projected incorporated into the
regular classroom. Thus if Mary Sunshine got an "A" on her Geography
test, there would be an area (perhaps 10 points) that are related to
what was learned in the library that semester. If you are nice (and
offer brownies) you would be able to get the Geography teacher to
grade the tests and present them as a collaborative effort.
