The January 2004 topic for Weed of the Month is: HIV/AIDS.

How many titles do you have on HIV/AIDS that were published in the
1980s? That was the decade that brought us the disease name for the
first time (1981), personalized it with famous names (Rock Hudson,
1985), and shocked us with the loss of a near friend or neighbor.
Almost twenty years ago we bought books and AV materials on the topic
and many of those titles are still on the shelves of media centers.
They contain outdated information and may lead our students to think of
the disease as one of their parent's generation and not theirs. Or
students may watch the news and think that it is just a problem in
another part of the world. But it's not something to ignore, over 5
million new HIV/AIDS cases (and 3 million deaths) were reported in
2002. Update your collection to reflect this threat.

A brief explanation of Weed of the Month for new LM_NET members: The
SUNLINK Weed of the Month began in September, 1997, from an idea by
Mike Eisenberg co-owner of LM_NET, and as an effort to help provide
Florida's School Library Media Specialists with guidelines and
suggestions for weeding their collections a little at a time as well as
adding quality materials. A section of the collection is identified
each month during the school year (September through May) as a weeding
target.

For more information, including guidelines for weeding this area,
suggested titles to examine, and possible titles to consider for
purchase, go to http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/ .The current topic,
as well as the archives of previous Weed of the Month topics for the
past years may be found at the same location by scrolling down the menu
bar on the left side of the screen.
