I assume you meant http://www.howellschools.com/~hwms/content/bib.html How do HS and college/university librarians like reteaching to a standardized format and all the students relearning how to cite digital information resources? It seems this method carries an implication that electronic resources are not of the same quality, importance, or usefulness as a paper based product. Citing electronic formats follows the same basic rules as traditional formats. Bibliography citation in any of the major systems is consistent and easily interpretable. The lack of information to be cited for an internet site (sponsoring institution, date And could there be some issue involved in using Ebsco, ProQuest, eLibrary, Gale, etc resources and not citing them? Using brackets around the URL eliminates the need to change the rule about periods. Normally you would cite encyclopedia page being referred to in the parenthetical reference. If the encyclopedia is alphabetically arranged, the researcher (and reader) wouldn't need volume and page numbers in the Works Cited page. Colleagues: Are you a school librarian struggling to teach bibliography skills to elementary, middle school or secondary students? Are the teachers in your facility reluctant to teach their students the important skilIs of recognizing the true source of their information and properly citing it 'cause it's just too much of a hassle? I may have something helpful for you: THE HIGHLANDER WAY BIBLIOGRAPHY FORMAT. A simplified blend of the most popular styles of citation, the format greatly simplifies bibliography. Our web site has a complete overview of the format, with available tips covering the finer points that tend to hang kids up. Best of all, you can download a printable Highlander Way Bibliography Format Worksheet in PDF format. It's designed to be used by students as they do their research projects to neatly keep track of their sources as they go. Once they're done filling out the sheet, they just transfer the information to their bibliography in -- the sheet keeps the information in order and provides all the punctuation. The major way in which the format simplifies bibliography is that students are taught to recognize and cite the original source of the information only. (After all, isn't that--recognizing where information REALLY comes from-- the information literacy skill that's the most important part of bibliography in the K-12 level?) That way, for instance, a student cites a magazine article found on a periodical database using precisely the same format used for a magazine accessing in print. Besides making citation easier, this helps kids recognize something many students miss: the fact that nothing they get off the computer actually comes "from the computer." The format helps kids recognize that good researchers commonly access reference sources, periodical articles, and even monographs electronically. We've been using the format for over five years now and I can tell you that our teachers, many of whom are not comfortable teaching bibliography, especially the citation of electronic sources--really appreciate having this handy guide and the accompanying worksheets always available. Several schools have adopted the bibliography format in the past and, now that it has been newly revised, I invite you to do the same. You have my permission to link to and use the content, just let me know if you choose to. If you'd rather mirror the content on your server, that's cool, too. I just need to know about it so that I can notify you of updates. I hope you find the Highlander Way Bibliography format useful.
