TARGET: Need title

I have an occupational therapist who is looking to finish a book she started
in 6th grade-in the 70's. She believes the book was a fantasy story about a
boy--probably with a magic ring. When the ring was worn, he didn't feel the
elements (it could rain and he wouldn't get wet). She thinks the story might
also have involved talking to animals. And, there may have been a cat
involved.  She moved during a break and was never able to finish the book
and it has bothered her ever since. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
