Since you folks were so helpful with my student's mixed up remembrance of the Diane Duane book, (That WAS what she was looking for) maybe you can help me solve one of my own mysteries. This was a dark purple hardback book with an old, strange but not quite spookyish looking black house (Victorian?) on the cover. Not sure, but we may be able to see the children looking out the window of the house on the cover. About standard size for a book for that age, maybe 9"x6"-ish? I read it about 1970 when I was in 5th or 6th grade. It was probably published in the 60's. It had the standard issue boy and girl who sent to live with, I think, an uncle. It seems as if they didn't like it at first but eventually discovered weird and interesting things around the house that intrigued them. I am just about positive it had a chapter called The Chambered Nautilus [nothing to do with the O.W. Holmes poem]. The nautilus was just a small shell, but somehow they were able to go inside it and through the chambers and it seems as though they barely made it out. Maybe the uncle helped them escape? Going inside was something perhaps there were not supposed to have tried? Getting a little hazy at this point. I remember it as being somewhat weirder and having a very different flavor than most anything else I was reading at the time. Any ideas?
