OK, thought I'd share with any of you Accelerated Reader user's what we are
trying with our 6th graders this month. I pulled all the books off my shelf
form the Fiction section that are NOT AR. I have ordered everything I can
that is available, and we still have about 400 books that aren't available
for AR. SO, the goal for the 6th grade is to read a NON-AR book, and write
the test for us. The teachers have been very supportive, and we will have
about 70 new tests when we are done. (maybe even more, 2 students have
already handed in their tests, and I noticed they each chose another NON-AR
book today, so hoping that means they are writing more tests:)). I have the
right to refuse any tests that I feel aren't written very well, or that
don't seem like the student actually read the book. The kids seem so
excited to be reading books that aren't AR. I tried to do a quick leveling
of each of the books, somewhat of a 'look at the length and type and hope we
get close'. I will be more specific when I start entering the tests into
the computer. Lucky for me, I have a list of GREAT volunteers that will be
wonderful helpers with this!!
