I posted the original messaged to Wired-MT because I thought it was a great
idea -- and an easy way to get tests made for books without them. A Montana
colleague reminded me that Renlearn now has a limit of 500 "teacher made"
tests. If you have more than 500 books without tests, you / students won't
be able to write tests for them all.

I have been using a similar strategy for quite a while with our middle
schoolers. Should they choose to read a book that is not currently AR,
either
an older title we own that does not have a test or a new find of their own
(I
do check the appropriateness of the latter), they may create a quiz to be
entered into the program. Before I enter the quiz, however, they must
convince two of their friends to read the book and take their quiz. After
the
three students agree on the best format for the quiz, I enter it into the
program, the two student "guinea pigs" are given credit for their respective
scores on the student generated quiz. The quiz creator gets 100% score on
the
quiz, extra credit as the creator as well as a bookplate placed in the
title,
thanking them for "donating" the quiz.
Since starting this policy, the participation by the students has been
better
than I expected, with them having a sense of ownership and a more positive
attitude toward the program.
