from another listserve (posted with permission from Caroline) Everyone on the list (and in the country) should read "Why Your Drugs Cost So Much" in the newest issue of Time, Feb. 2, 2004. It should be an eye-opener for some, and it will give you fuel to use when talking to voters and legislators. The graphs on pages 46-47 would make an excellent lesson idea for math, social studies, or statistics teachers and work into your TEKS. Students could practice reading these, could look for stats from other sources to defend or refute the Time stats, could make similar graphs with different topics (perhaps oil consumption or ag production). In fact, English teachers should spend more time working cooperatively with other subject teachers to assign a research topic in this manner, one that is modeled after the Time layout of text, photos, graphs, bold quotes, etc. Research papers on topics of importance like this one and many others that the nation faces would be more valuable than those same old "literary criticism" topics that rarely, if ever, have value to contemporary students unless they are planning to be authors or English profs (and most are not). There are still plenty of "English class skills" to be used and evaluated in a research topic like this. Caroline Joiner Sacred Heart School, Lib/Tech Coord.
