I agree absolutely with changing dewey/lc numbers as we see the need for our library population. And Vicki is absolutely correctly about minutes to make decisions on the classif. number. When I was Director of a public library-- a book about Marlena Detrich (sp) was classified under TV personalities?????? Knowledge of cultural literacy is a huge issue. They have subject guidelines just as we do, and the background knowledge of a professional cataloguer (sp) is essential. cb Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are. I visited their office about 10 years ago. They have only a few minutes to spend on each book. They often make mistakes. I remember when Julius Lester's Brer Rabbit stories came out that all 3 titles were classified in different Dewey numbers. Also as new Dewey editions come out they change numbers. Therefore, what is published on the verso may no longer be correct. The reason we take cataloging classes is so we know how to catalog. Also the Lib of Congress doesn't know our school or collection. That doesn't mean that we can do anything willy, nilly--but it does mean that we don't just automatically follow what is printed on the verso.
