I work hard at not being one of those stereotypical librarians who goes
around shushing everyone to be quiet. Sometimes kids will come into
their library and they'll be talking in a whisper while they sign in,
etc. I'll go over to them and say, "Why are you whispering?" They'll
inevitably answer, "Because we're in the library." I'll reply, "I'm not
whispering, so why are you?" It's unfortunate that kids (and grownups)
often associate libraries with whispering!
