It is more than the idea that students bring more than decoding. My
experience is that decoding *is* a huge deal -- I see too many HS &
college students daily who don't bring decoding, so the other stuff they
bring doesn't get developed. If you give that as the reason Lexiles
have limited value, a person who puts more importance on decoding may
question that opinion of Lexile.

At the decoding level, which is more difficult: chasm or unimportant?
phlegm or incomplete?

Then, on top of that, there are all the vocabulary, familiarity,
complexity, writing style & structure, and assorted other readability
issues that aren't even touched... but even if someone believes that
The Issue is Decoding, they should be informed that Lexile doesn't
address that issue well.

It's an interesting piece of information -- but attributing importance
to it would IMHO be in error.

Beverly,
Personally I think that all lexile numbers are inappropriate. [Check to
see
the Lexile level of East of Eden or Grapes of Wrath among others ] .
Lexiling a book means the Metametrics has used their high powered
computer
to count syllables- no content is taken into consideration. I'm not sure
why
you're doing this, but you need to let the teachers and parents know
that
this system is only a guideline for the complexity of the words and
sentences written in the book. Given that kids bring more to their
reading
than just decoding skills, I should hope that other considerations are
given
in guiding children in their reading choices. Don't let anyone [!] use
these
lexiles as ways to stop kids from choosing books they might like to
read.
Sorry for the rant, but Lexiles get me going....
